Mark Sanford-why I won’t give up (Full press conf. video below)

Yesterday I was talking to a friend and we are talking about the usual stuff that people talk about these days. You know, it goes like this:

Friend: “How you doing? Cool…[no pause for an answer] well make sure you check out my Twitter, checkout my facebook, check out my this, check out my that. Also, don’t forget to check my website, I have some cool updates coming soon…”

Me: “Cool, I just got a Twitter account and a blog. It’s tulsaPolitico.com, and….[cut off by friend]“

Friend: “uhhh…yeah, I’m not really in politics. But that’s cool if it’s your thing, though. I just don’t like being lied to. I gotta go so I’ll see you later, don’t forget to check out my 10 billion updates. Nice talking to you by the way.”

Me: “grrrr…”

This is the type of conversation that produces a hint of, let’s say, disquitedness in me. It does so because I believe the person that says, “I’m not interested in politics or politicians,” is saying, “I really don’t care that I’m supposed to help govern the US by electing good people that I want in office.” I do understand that we don’t always have the options we want, or that we may feel it is better we don’t vote because we don’t know enough about the candidates. To those people, I understand you and have no qualm with you. It’s the ones that “don’t care,” but always complain. I will use Governor Sanford as an example.

Mark Sanford was one of those guys I was rooting for. I didn’t care that he was a Republican, and I wouldn’t have cared if he were a Democrat. I was rooting for him because he was rejecting stimulus money he felt his state didn’t need. I could remember thinking to myself, “now there is a good one.” There was a person who is using practical judgement and seeing that if we keep spending what we don’t have trouble will come. I don’t think this is a Republican or Democratic issue, I think it’s a common sense issue.

I, like many others, felt a bit of unhapiness about his scandal. Usually, the same variation of one thought/reflection will come to my mind when I find out a politician is proven to be a liar, a cheater, or thief. The thought that I reflect on is similar to the conversation I had with the friend above, “I guess all politicians are liars with smoke and mirrors.” I don’t, however, let that stop me from being a part of the whole, which is our democratic-republic. I wish more people would realize that all citizens govern by selecting a few to govern all. And, when the all doesn’t like the few, the all should remove the few and select a different few to govern the all. :)

That is the process given to us by our constitution. As a famous person has said, “we surround them.” I believe our “founding fathers” understood that it is about us, and not about the them that we elect. The politicians we elect are from us and should govern for us, and when they don’t we elect new ones. But, for many good reasons good citizens have forfeited their great rights by abdicating their minds from politics because of all the “lies and mirrors.” I say to you who do this, stop. Be apart of what is happening and share your concerns and suggestions. If you feel no one is listening to you, move on until you find others that will listen to you. Join them, embrace them, and work with them so that everyone can benefit by your ideas.

I’ve titled this post “Mark Sanford-why I won’t give up,” because I believe I have been let down by a person who was elected to office. I did not directly elect him, but  in this moment of time he stand as a poster child for politicians who have been hypocritical. I hope the best for him and his family as they go through this difficult time, but life goes on. I will go on, we must go on.
Below you can view the full version of his press conference. I haven’t seen it in many places, so I thought I would post it here. I have seen the way it has been edited on TV, and it has led to some people saying things that aren’t necessarily true. Feel free to watch and enjoy.

Possibly a rapping Mayor???

I must admit, I hadn’t paid any attention to Clay Clark up until 10 minutes ago when I heard one of his rap youtube videos (posted below). In the song Clay raps over a Jay-Z beat called “Hard Knock Life” and raps about issues such as, city lights, police and fire-fighter pay, and more. Initially, I listened to the song no real intent, just because I was curious I suppose. But, as I listened to the song I saw how Clay Clark could potentially galvanize a younger group of voters like Obama did.
Here are three reasons why I think he could get a group of voters that normally wouldn’t vote in a mayoral race…

#1) He’s causing people to turn their heads and look at him: I know he’s young and some are wondering if he will be an eccentric mayoral candidate. (check out Chris Medlocks Blog). But maybe, just maybe, he’s got it all figured out. I think we should keep in mind that Clay has been running noticeable adds since the earlier days of his DJ business. I can even remember back to my college days at OSU, back then Clay drove a red van that was very colorfully decorated and let people know that he was on the scene and so was his business. So,  turning heads is not a new thing for him, but it is to some of us.

I will also point out, that it is not difficult to get a crowd or have people look at you. What is difficult is having something to say that connects with a crowd and makes them want to continue to listen.

#2) He has recognizable content that a lot of people can relate to: When I saw the link to his youtube rap song I thought it was going to be a silly song about nothing. It was a silly song, but  he actually had content in it and a fairly good rapping ability. I could see unsuspecting younger kids listening to it because it’s cool, and agreeing to some of his statements whether they fully understand them or not. Here is one bit I thought was clever on his part, this is at the end of the video.

News Anchor: [British Accent] “Hello sir, I’m with the local media…how would you respond to the allegations you are not qualified…?”

Clay Clark: “It is absolutely true, I have no political experience ruining the city of Tulsa…”

That’s pretty witty, and I believe that people are looking for someone to shake things up. I’m not sure if that is good or bad.

#3) People want change: It doesn’t matter who you speak with, Democrat, Libertarian or Republican, people want change. We have seen, as of lately, that there is good change and bad change. But change is needed and wanted. Mr. Clark doesn’t seem to be running the normal type of campaign we are accustomed to. He’s running a campaign like he has run his business; get the word out and then deliver. I’m not so sure on what he has delivered or may deliver politically, but it seems he would like to change a few things.

Ok, so there you have it. Will Tulsa have a mayor that can rap about his plans, or will we decide otherwise? I think it is still too early to bet on one candidate (seeing that at the moment there are only three in the race with no democrats or independents yet), but this could get very interesting.

Hello, World!

Ok, so the site has been up for a bit and I am finally seeing the results in Google when I search for TulsaPolitico.com. I  have just invited you and other people to check out the site and make some suggestions on what you would like to see as far as resources and information. I am currently in the process of trying to get all the candidates that are running for a municipal office in Tulsa on the Local Candidates page. If you know of someone who is running and would like for me to list them here, please go to the contact form and let me know.

I haven’t been doing a lot of blogging because there are so many other things I’m trying to gather in terms of information about Tulsa politics. I already have some things for you to view, so when you get a chance check out the wall of mayors and the forum (to get some good healthy debate going ).

Well, thank you all for stopping by your place for Tulsa Politics.

Joseph

Up and kind of running

Well, this website has been an idea of mine for a while and I am finally getting it started. Today I picked out the theme, did a few modifications and I’m now trying to get some backend duties completed. I thought putting a website like this together would have been much easier, but I’m finding that the most difficult part in doing a site like this is creating the structure of the content. I figure if I set up a good foundation now, it’ll be easier to manage later. We’ll see how that goes.

Thanks for stopping by the website.
