Back in the day (prior to 1990), Tulsa elected a Mayor and 4 city commissioners to run the city. The 4 commissioner positions -Police & Fire, Streets & Public Property, Waterworks & Sewerage, and
Finance & Revenue, seemed to be a little outdated as the city began to grow and some of the job titles didn’t fit. As an example, police powers included “To prohibit and restrain or regulate the rolling of hoops, the flying of kites and the firing of firecrackers, the use of velocipedes, roller skates and bicycles, slingshots, and the use of any pyrotechnic or any other amusement or practices tending to annoy persons passing upon the streets or sidewalks, or to frighten horses and teams.” I think it is a good thing they updated it!

When the city amended its charter in 1990 we went to a new system of city government called Mayor-council. As you will see below, it has our Mayor (serves a 4 year term), 9 district councilors (serves a 2 year term), and 1 city auditor (serves a 2 year term). All 11 positions are filled through the process of election.
